Comic-Con Update
At first, when you immerse yourself in the geekdom of Comic-Con -- usually around the time you first encounter your first Furry-ocelot Legolas discussing the all-day Dual Masters Stompatron Booster Draft with a Jedi warrior wearing Woody Allen glasses -- you suffer a momentary shock, as if your lungs are filling with fluid. You panic; you struggle; you convulse and claw for the surface. ("These... these can't be my people!...") But soon, the convulsions subside, your dormant Nerd-Gills open up and begin rippling smoothly, and once again you are in your element, this great celebration of the imagination. That's right, Bud. Your body remembers!*

And now for some PORN. The Copic Pen company has a booth at Comic-Con:

One hundred fifty dollars for a set of color brush pens.... I've got some serious soul-searching to do this weekend.

I used to be aching like mad to get Copic markers, having had a few Japanese import books. Of course, even the best art supply stores couldn't get them and the language barrier made it all but impossible to overseas order it.

By the time they became just another thing you can order, I'd already got a large set of Prismacolor markers which also became unnecessary when I obtained Flatbed Scanners, a Wacom and some good software.

I know it's not 'their fault' but I'm a bit mad nowadays when I see copics for sale, remembering how much I wanted them in the past, only to get disappointed again and again and again.

If you recognize the source of this quote, you're a nerd.

If you own the movie on Laserdisc (as well as DVD), you're as nerdy as a very nerdy thing.

OK, I give up. That quote keeps tickling the back of my head, but the fact that it's on LD means that it probably can't be my first thought. And I'm old enough that I probably saw it in the theater and just haven't gotten around to buying the DVD.

Man, those markers ain't all that. The tip's a lot harder to control than a Tria and since they're so expensive you always feel BAD about using it up. So I never did.

Good to know. I'll definitely think twice about splurging!

We got a handful of them one year, and they seem to run out faster than Prismas and Trias, too. But maybe that's just my angry, unable-to-afford-a-whole-set perception.

Glad to hear you made it down to ComicCon. Never been to one, but I'm tempted.

But, dang, grad school and eight years in Tech World have horribly withered my nerd gills. I picture myself fondling a Robby the Robot figure and mumbling "I . . . I knew what this was, once. But what does it mean?"

I like the name "copic." It sounds vaguely Middle-East mystical, and suggests that they are made by blind eunuch monks who can sense that they have achieved the perfect color mix in a pen by the smell of the mix of ingredients in the pigment.

Mmm, I went back to that booth at least three times just to ogle. I never could work up the balls to buy a full set of those, though. So I started small, and bought a few every time I felt like I needed some more colors.

They worked out pretty nicely for me, if it makes a difference. Plus the refill option is NICE. You can fill them up anywhere from four to six times (depending on whether you're a loser like me, and keep spilling ink all over yourself every time you fill up your marker until you get the hang of how much to use) with one refill, so I think it's worth the initial price... but then, I've never tried Trias, either, and everybody seems to think they're the bee's knees. I just got sick of Prismacolors soaking through even my thick paper.

Plus they're fun. Hard to handle sometimes I guess, but they make so much pretty. I love brush tips

Also: Nerd-Gills. It's funny cause it's true.
